What schema markup is and why it matters

Schema markup is structured data that labels the parts of a page, such as the business name, the service offered, the author of an article or the price of a product. Search engines use these labels to understand your content more accurately. Valid markup can make your page eligible for enhanced results, though the final display is up to Google.

Choosing the right schema type for your page

Use Organisation on your about or homepage, Service on each service page, Article on blog posts, and Product on store product pages. Mixing types or describing content that is not on the page can cause errors, so keep the markup honest and specific to each page.

Testing your schema before you publish

Paste the generated code into your page, then run the URL through Google Rich Results Test. Fix any errors it reports, and check warnings for missing recommended fields. Re-test after each major change so your JSON-LD stays valid.

Frequently asked questions

What is JSON-LD schema?

JSON-LD is structured data written in a script tag. It tells search engines what your page is about, such as an article, service or product, which can make your result eligible for rich results.

Where do I paste the schema code in WordPress?

Add it to a Custom HTML block in the page, or use the schema settings in Rank Math or another SEO plugin. Make sure the data matches what is visible on the page.

Will schema guarantee rich results?

No. Google decides whether to show rich results. Valid, accurate schema makes your page eligible, but it does not guarantee a special display.

json-ld schema generator

Generate JSON-LD schema for your WordPress pages

This JSON-LD schema generator creates structured data for organisations, services, articles and products. Choose a type, fill in the details and copy the code into your page header or a schema plugin. JSON-LD is the format Google recommends for structured data, and the generator outputs it in the standard script tag so it is easy to paste.

Which schema type to use

Use Organization schema for your business profile, Service schema for the services you offer, Article schema for blog posts and Product schema for store items. Each type describes only what is visible on the page, which keeps the markup accurate. Schema.org defines every property in its documentation, and our generator uses the properties that matter most for search.

Test the code before you publish

After you paste the code, check it with Google’s Rich Results Test and fix any errors it reports. Keep the markup in sync with the page, so a price or availability change is reflected in the schema too. Mismatches between the page and the markup can stop rich results from appearing.

Common mistakes with structured data

The most frequent mistakes are marking up content that is not visible on the page, using a price that does not match the product, leaving required fields empty, and copying one schema block onto every page. Each page should describe its own content. Our generator asks for the details that each type needs, so the code stays focused and accurate.

Schema across a whole WordPress site

Schema works best when every page type is set up consistently. Your organisation details should match across the site, and service and product pages should follow the same pattern. Our WordPress development work includes structured data in the build, and our ecommerce SEO service covers product schema for Shopify and WooCommerce stores.

Next steps

Once your schema is in place, check the basics of the page too, using the WordPress speed checker and the XML sitemap checker. If you want structured data set up across your whole site, contact our team and we will reply within 24 hours with a plan.

Choosing the right schema for each page

Match the schema type to the page’s real purpose. A homepage or about page can use Organization schema. A service page can use Service schema. A blog post can use Article schema, and a product page can use Product schema. Using the wrong type confuses search engines more than leaving the markup out, so think about what each page is about before you generate code.

Schema should also match the visible text. If the page says a product is in stock, the markup should say so too. If the page shows a price, the markup should show the same price. Mismatches can cause rich results to be withheld, so review the code each time the page changes.

Adding the code to WordPress

You can paste the generated script into a header or footer script area, or into a block that outputs custom HTML on the page. A schema plugin also works if it lets you add custom JSON-LD for each page type. Clear the cache after each change, so the new markup appears for visitors and crawlers.

Test every page type once. Our WordPress development team sets up structured data as part of each build, so the markup is consistent across the whole site.

Keeping structured data accurate over time

Structured data should be reviewed whenever the page changes. Update the price, the availability and the business hours in the markup when they change on the page. Stale schema is one of the most common problems we find during audits, and it is simple to prevent with a short review schedule.

Use the schema generator to rebuild the block when a page is redesigned, rather than editing old code by hand. A fresh block is easier to check and less likely to contain leftover details.
