Want to get mentioned in ChatGPT when customers ask for a business like yours? You cannot pay for it, but you can make your business much easier for AI tools to find, understand and trust. These are the steps we use on our own site and for clients.

Team checking how to get mentioned in ChatGPT and other AI answers

Quick answer: let AI crawlers read your site, write pages that answer real questions in the first few lines, keep your business details the same everywhere, and earn genuine mentions on other trusted sites and communities.

How ChatGPT decides which businesses to mention

When ChatGPT searches the web, it reads pages, then summarises what several sources agree on. Businesses that are clearly described on their own site and also mentioned on other trusted sites are easier for it to recommend. Studies of AI answers in 2026 also show community sites like Reddit among the most cited sources.

9 steps to get mentioned in ChatGPT

1. Let AI crawlers read your site

OpenAI lists its crawlers, including OAI-SearchBot for ChatGPT search, on its bots documentation. Make sure your robots.txt does not block them. Our free robots.txt generator can help.

2. Answer the question in the first two lines

AI tools lift short, direct answers. Put the answer first, then the detail, tables and examples. Pages written this way are the ones that get mentioned in ChatGPT most often, because the answer is easy to quote.

3. Say clearly who you are and where you work

Your home page and About page should state what you do, for whom, and where. Use the same business name, address and phone number on every profile. If your details disagree across the web, AI tools are less confident about recommending you.

4. Add structured data

Organization, service and FAQ schema help machines read your pages. Google’s guide to Organization structured data is a good start, and our JSON-LD schema generator writes the code for you.

5. Get listed where AI tools look

Keep complete profiles on trusted directories and review sites in your industry. In our own AI visibility report, a directory listing was one of the first places that brought us an AI mention.

6. Join real conversations

Answer questions on Reddit, Quora and industry forums with genuinely useful replies. Mention your business only where it fits and follow each community’s rules. Spam gets removed and helps no one.

7. Keep important pages fresh

Update prices, dates and examples on your key pages. Stale pages are less likely to be trusted.

8. Submit your site to Bing too

Microsoft Copilot uses Bing’s index, so add your sitemap in Bing Webmaster Tools as well as Google Search Console.

9. Track your AI visibility every month

Ask ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google the questions your customers ask, and note whether you appear. Tools such as Semrush now report AI mentions too. Our own report recently showed one ChatGPT mention and ten of our pages cited, a small start we now track monthly.

Prompts to test whether you get mentioned in ChatGPT

Ask these the way a customer would, and save the answers each month so you can see what changes:

  • “Best [your service] in [your city]”
  • “Who can help me with [problem you solve]?”
  • “[Your business name] reviews”
  • “Compare [your business] and [a competitor]”
  • “How much does [your service] cost in India?”

A quick checklist

TaskDone?
AI crawlers allowed in robots.txt☐
Answer-first intro on key pages☐
Same name, address and phone everywhere☐
Organization and FAQ schema added☐
Profiles on trusted directories☐
Helpful answers in real communities☐
Sitemap in Google and Bing☐
Monthly AI visibility check☐

Work through this list in order. Most businesses that never get mentioned in ChatGPT are missing the first three items, not the advanced ones.

What does not work

  • Buying “AI mentions” or fake reviews.
  • Posting the same promotional comment across many communities.
  • Pages stuffed with keywords and no clear answer.

Frequently asked questions

Can I pay to get mentioned in ChatGPT?

No. There is no paid placement in ChatGPT answers. Visibility comes from clear content and genuine mentions on other sites.

How long does it take to get mentioned in ChatGPT?

Does normal SEO help with ChatGPT?

Yes. Crawlable pages, clear answers, structured data and real links help in both Google and AI search.
