Shopify COD (cash on delivery) is not optional for most Indian D2C brands: a large share of shoppers still want to pay on delivery. The setup itself takes five minutes. The hard part is stopping fake and refused COD orders from eating your margin. This guide covers both.

Shopify COD setup on Indian D2C stores built by CrestVox Studio

Quick answer: turn on Cash on Delivery under Settings, Payments, Manual payment methods. Then add order confirmation, pincode checks and a small prepaid discount so fewer COD parcels come back as RTO (return to origin).

How to turn on Shopify COD

  1. In your Shopify admin, open Settings and then Payments.
  2. Under Manual payment methods, add Cash on Delivery (COD).
  3. Write short instructions customers will see, for example “Please keep exact change ready”.
  4. Save, then place a test order to check the checkout and order emails.

Shopify’s own help page on manual payment methods shows the current screens. COD orders arrive as unpaid, so mark them paid only after your courier remits the cash.

Online payments still matter: pick a gateway

Shopify Payments is not available in India, so prepaid orders run through a third-party gateway such as Razorpay, PayU or Cashfree. Shopify may add a transaction fee for third-party gateways depending on your plan, so check this before you compare costs. A smooth UPI checkout is your best tool for moving customers from COD to prepaid.

Why Shopify COD orders get returned (RTO)

  • Fake or prank orders with wrong phone numbers.
  • Impulse buyers who change their mind before the parcel arrives.
  • Incomplete addresses or pincodes your courier does not serve.
  • Long delivery times that give buyers time to cancel.

Every returned COD parcel costs you shipping both ways and blocks stock for days, so cutting RTO usually matters more than the COD setting itself.

7 ways to reduce Shopify COD returns in India

  1. Confirm every COD order by WhatsApp, SMS or a call before you ship. Apps can automate this.
  2. Check pincode serviceability on the product page so customers know before they order.
  3. Offer a prepaid incentive, such as a small discount or free shipping on UPI.
  4. Add a COD fee or partial advance for high-value orders, using an app that supports it.
  5. Limit COD by order value or pincode where your RTO history is worst.
  6. Ship fast, because the longer the wait, the more buyers cancel.
  7. Track NDR (non-delivery reports) with your shipping partner and call the customer before the parcel is sent back.

What to look for in a Shopify COD app

The default Shopify COD setting only switches the payment method on. Most Indian stores add one app for the rest. Before you install one, check that it can:

  • Confirm orders automatically by WhatsApp or SMS and update the order tag.
  • Hide COD by pincode, order value or product.
  • Add a COD fee or take a partial advance.
  • Show a prepaid offer at checkout.
  • Work with your shipping partner’s NDR flow.

Test any Shopify COD app on a development store first, and check how much it slows down your product pages.

Shopify COD numbers to track every month

MetricWhat it tells you
COD share of ordersHow dependent you are on cash on delivery
Confirmation rateHow many COD orders customers actually confirm
RTO rate on CODHow many COD parcels come back
RTO rate by pincodeWhere to restrict Shopify COD
Prepaid conversionWhether your prepaid offer is working

Review these every month. A rising RTO rate in one region is usually the first sign you should limit Shopify COD there.

Shopify or WooCommerce for COD-heavy stores?

Both handle COD. Shopify has the bigger choice of India-ready COD and confirmation apps, while WooCommerce gives you more control and no platform transaction fee. If COD is most of your sales, compare the full monthly cost on both. Our WooCommerce vs Shopify for Indian D2C brands guide walks through it.

Make checkout work for prepaid buyers too
