Why is my WordPress contact form not working?

A contact form not working in WordPress usually means the form submits but the email never arrives, or the form fails because of a plugin conflict, caching, a JavaScript error or a spam filter. Test delivery first, then check the form settings, caching and plugins in order.

A contact form not working costs you leads without any warning. The page looks fine, so visitors fill it in, but the messages vanish. Finding the cause takes a few structured tests.

First, decide which kind of failure you have: the form shows an error or never submits, or it says “thank you” but the email never reaches you.

Fix 1: check email delivery

Most cases of a contact form not working are really email problems. Your server sends the message without authentication, so it is blocked or lands in spam. Route mail through SMTP and add SPF and DKIM records. We explain the full fix in why WordPress is not sending emails.

Fix 2: save entries in the database

Turn on entry storage in your form plugin, or add a plugin that saves submissions. Then submit a test. If the entry is saved but no email arrives, delivery is the problem. If nothing is saved, the form itself is failing.

Fix 3: check the form settings

  • The “to” address is correct and the mailbox is not full.
  • The “from” address uses your own domain.
  • Required fields and validation rules are not blocking real visitors.

Popular plugins such as Contact Form 7 show a configuration warning when a setting may cause delivery problems.

Fix 4: look for JavaScript errors

If the form spins forever, open the browser console on the form page. A red error often points to a plugin or theme script. Optimisation plugins that combine or delay scripts are a common cause. Exclude the form plugin’s scripts from those settings.

Fix 5: caching and security

Forms use security tokens that expire. If the page is cached for too long, visitors may submit an old token and fail. Exclude the contact page from page caching, or shorten the cache time. Also check that firewall or security plugins are not blocking form requests.

Fix 6: review spam protection

CAPTCHA, honeypots and spam filters protect forms, but strict settings can block real people. If visitors report errors, test with your phone on mobile data and adjust the spam rules.

Fix 7: test plugin conflicts

On a staging site, turn off other plugins one by one until the form works. The last one you turned off is the conflict. Update it, replace it or ask its developer for a fix.

Prevent a contact form not working in future

  1. Send a test submission every week, or use a monitoring tool that does it for you.
  2. Store all entries in the database or your CRM.
  3. Test the form after every plugin update.
  4. Show a clear backup option, such as a phone number or WhatsApp link.

Our maintenance plans include form checks after every update.

Example: a contact form not working only for mobile visitors

An agency found that leads had dropped, but tests from the office worked. The contact form not working only affected mobile visitors, because an optimisation plugin delayed the form script on small screens. Excluding that script fixed it in minutes. The lesson is to test a contact form not working from more than one device and network, and logged out, before deciding where the fault is. A second common case is a contact form not working after a security plugin update that blocked form requests. Checking the security log revealed the block straight away.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my form work for me but not for customers?

You are logged in, so you skip the page cache and security rules that visitors hit. Test in a private window.

Should I switch to a different form plugin?

Only after fixing email delivery. Most form plugins fail the same way when server mail is the problem.

Can spam protection block real messages?

Yes, if it is too strict. Check the spam log in your form plugin.

How do I know how many leads I lost?

If entries were stored in the database, you can see them all. If not, check your server mail logs with your host.
