Why is my WordPress menu not showing?

A WordPress menu not showing is usually caused by a menu that is not assigned to a theme location, a block theme that uses the Navigation block instead of classic menus, caching, or a JavaScript error that breaks the mobile menu. Check the menu location first, then the theme type and scripts.

A WordPress menu not showing leaves visitors with no way to move around your site. It often happens after changing themes, updating plugins or editing menus. The fix is usually simple once you know where to look.

wordpress menu not showing

Start by noting where the menu is missing: on every device, only on mobile, or only on certain pages.

Cause 1: the menu is not assigned to a location

Classic themes show menus in named locations, such as Primary or Footer. If your menu is not assigned, nothing appears. Go to Appearance, then Menus, open your menu and tick the right display location. The Menus screen guide explains each option.

Changing themes is the most common trigger for a WordPress menu not showing, because the new theme has different location names.

Cause 2: you use a block theme

Block themes do not use the classic Menus screen. Navigation is built with the Navigation block in the Site Editor, under Appearance, then Editor. If you created a menu in the old screen, the block theme may not display it until you select it inside the Navigation block. The Navigation block guide shows how.

Theme typeWhere to edit the menu
Classic themeAppearance, Menus
Block themeAppearance, Editor, Navigation block
Page builder headerThe builder’s header template

Cause 3: the mobile menu does not open

If the menu works on desktop but the mobile button does nothing, a JavaScript error is the usual cause. Optimisation plugins that delay or combine scripts can break the toggle. Open the browser console, look for red errors and exclude the theme’s menu script from those optimisations.

Cause 4: caching

If you changed the menu and the site still shows the old one, clear your caching plugin, hosting cache and CDN. Read why WordPress changes are not showing for the full checklist.

Cause 5: CSS is hiding the menu

Custom CSS or a theme setting may hide the menu at certain screen sizes. Use your browser’s inspect tool on the header. If the menu exists in the code but is hidden, a display or visibility rule is the cause.

Cause 6: a page uses a different header

Landing pages and some templates use a blank or minimal header on purpose. If the menu is missing on only a few pages, check which template those pages use.

Quick checklist for a WordPress menu not showing

  1. Confirm the menu has items and is saved.
  2. Assign it to the correct location, or select it in the Navigation block.
  3. Clear every cache.
  4. Test on mobile and check the console for errors.
  5. Check the page template and custom CSS.

When to get help

If the menu is built by a custom theme or a page builder and none of the checks work, the header template may need a developer. Our maintenance team fixes navigation issues as part of minor edits each month.

Example: WordPress menu not showing after a redesign

A business switched from an old classic theme to a modern block theme. The pages looked great, but the main navigation was empty. The old menu existed, yet the block theme’s Navigation block was pointing at a new, blank menu. Selecting the old menu inside the Navigation block fixed the WordPress menu not showing in seconds. If you redesign or change themes, add a menu check to your launch list so a WordPress menu not showing never reaches your visitors. It is one of the easiest problems to catch before launch and one of the most damaging to miss.
